The Unmarked Body
Rachel curated The Unmarked Body, an exhibition programme presenting artworks by four women and non-binary Palestinian Israeli artists. Her proposal for the show, commissioned by Quilliam, was selected from an international open call by Art Cube Artists’ Studios to feature in the tenth anniversary edition of Jerusalem’s contemporary art festival, Manofim, 2018-19. An intersectional approach to contested subject matter underpinned the curation of performance, sculpture, installation, photography and film. Through site-specific artworks expressing the idea of a musical suspension, or unresolved dissonance, The Unmarked Body aimed to complicate binary notions of identity. An exhibition catalogue was translated in English, Arabic and Hebrew.
Here Rachel is interviewed by the Jerusalem Post about the programme.
Rachel co-curated The unbreakable rope, an exhibition programme including works by ten international artists exploring sexuality in Islam. The unbreakable rope was commissioned by Quilliam and presented at Free Word Centre in 2016. Taking its name from an 8th-century erotic Arabic poem, the show sought to illuminate a legacy of diverse sexuality and non-heteronormative identity in Islamic culture through the ages. For the public programme, Rachel curated a panel of international authors, activists and Muslim drag queens to discuss creative modes of resistance against prejudice.
